RESOURCES AND SUPPORT FOR
 LIVING WITH DRUGS

At QuIHN we provide services to people who use drugs & alcohol, and for people who are supporting family/friends with their substance use. Whether you're navigating your own journey or supporting a loved one, we are here to help. Explore the key topics below to better understand substance use, harm reduction strategies, and mental health support.

The Stages of Change

The Stages of Change Model, also known as the trans-theoretical model, is a way to understand and approach behaviour change. At QuIHN, we use this model to help people move through the stages of pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance on their path toward change. Understanding where someone is in their journey can help guide the right support and intervention.

Helping a Friend or Family Member with Substance Use

Supporting a loved one who is struggling with substance use can feel overwhelming. It's normal to experience a range of emotions, from anger and fear to helplessness. QuIHN provides guidance and resources to help you understand substance use and offer the best possible support to your friend or family member.

Caring for Your Family

It's essential to keep your loved ones safe and well, even if they are not ready to make changes. QuIHN offers harm reduction strategies to help reduce risks until they are ready to take the next step. These strategies are designed to minimise harm and promote health until your family member is prepared to engage in treatment or change.

Removing Stigma

Stigma is a negative label or perception that can lead people to think less of an individual. For those experiencing substance use issues, stigma often results in poorer health outcomes and can prevent people from seeking help. At QuIHN, we are committed to breaking down these barriers by promoting a compassionate and non-judgmental approach.

Safer Injecting

If you're injecting drugs, there are practical steps you can take to reduce the risks associated with injecting. QuIHN provides education and resources on safer injecting practices to minimise the chance of overdose, vein damage, and infection, helping you stay as safe as possible.

Recognising and Responding to Overdose

Recognising the signs of an overdose and knowing how to respond can save lives. If you or someone you love is using drugs, learning how to identify overdose symptoms and take action could make all the difference in an emergency situation.

Are you carrying Naloxone? Naloxone is a fast-acting medication that temporarily reverses the effects of opioid overdose, allowing the person to breathe again while emergency services are on their way.

Mental Health and Substance Use

At QuIHN, we approach substance use and mental health from a harm reduction framework. Our services address both issues simultaneously, helping individuals manage their mental health while addressing substance use. We believe in supporting the whole person, not just the symptoms.
